It'll rattle around oh so nicely. We like the gentle jingle of small coins, all those Lincoln faces, and Roosevelt faces, and Washington faces, and occasionally, a Kennedy or Sacajawea face. We've decided to start a collection of them, so they can hobnob and confab and scheme. We were going to call this the ASD Superpac, but that would require a lot more paperwork, paperwork that would cut into our coin collection. Instead, we're just calling it the ASD Kickstarter Campaign. The funds generated by this campaign will be used not to support some shady political character, but to defray some of the expense involved in the production, release, and promotion of our new album, Waterfowl of Eastern Canada, available March 3rd at our release party. Below is our Kickstarter video, where you can learn about of few of the other things we may need to use the shiny, clinky, coins for. Enjoy.

Like all families, A Seasonal Disguise has had its ups and downs, it's lefts and rights, its Chico and the Man.
In October, our longtime drummer extraordinare, Aaron Nuttall, left the band to pursue other pursuits. After a suitable period of mourning, (no he's not dead, we're just overly dramatic), we were fortunate to find the right man to sit his tall and swart throne. And that man is a woman. And that woman is Annie Berical.

Annie was once a fan of this band, and now she's holding down the beats. Annie's mind is steel...the hard kind. Her arms are strong, her humor wicked. Annie's amazing hair will cause you to curse your parents for their genetic laxitude. Oh yeah, and get this...Annie sings.

Head on down to the Visual Arts Collective (VAC) tonight for Uber Tuesday. The line-up is phenomenal, Ant Lion, Owlright, Dark Swallows, and headlined by Dirty Mittens out of Portland. ASD had the opportunity to open for Dirty Mittens a few months ago at Neurolux and they put on a hellavuh show. Your limbs will shake, and not from the St. Vitus Dance.

Radio Boise Heading for Your Ears!

Greetings Boise area artists.

This is one of those impersonal spam emails that you may want to actually read.

First off, thanks to everyone that has responded to Radio Boise so far. As you may or may not know, after 8 long years of putting this project together, we are finally going ON AIR.

As of April 11th, we will be broadcasting on KRBX 89.9 fm.

The new studio is almost done. We paid particular attention to the performance space. What sets our station aside from most is the ability for local and touring bands / artists to perform live at the station, in a space that was designed specifically for this purpose. This is something that we are extremely excited about.

Here is where you come in. We are still in fundraising mode. The studio is about 75% budgeted for, and we are trying to raise another $8500 to complete it. WE ARE SO CLOSE.

It is an amazing site that raises funds for creative projects. Very helpful for bands / artists trying to raise money from anything from making a record to buying a van to tour in.

Its a busy busy week around these here parts, so things will be brief and dry as hell.

First of, some shout outs and rad shows.

WEDNESDAY: there is a fabulous show happening at Visual Arts Collective. Our good friends Sleepy Seeds, No Comprendo, and With Child are playing as well as San Francisco bands Mosshead and Street Pyramids. Its a "John Denver Tribute Show" and I hear that John Denver will be there performing a couple classics and spend the rest of the evening making sure no other band plays his music.

Friday: Our buddies in Finn Riggins are playing early (8pm) at Neurolux opening up for Tennis. Sexay.

Saturday: Discoma and Bonefish Sam will be performing a night of fucked up awesomeness, again at the Visual Arts Collective. Discoma is the long time project of music man extraordinaire Jake Hite (you may know him as the guy in the metal shirts behind the drum kits of pop bands) and will feature a string quartet and some dewsh (spelling courtesy of S. Stimpert) on guitar. Bonefish Sam is playing for the first time in 2+ years and I hear they've only gotten radder. Aforementioned dewsh (me) will also be playing between sets with help from ASD's own K. Jar. Sing. Its gonna be LOUD.

Second, ASD and cubes of color....

The magnificent new all ages venue Colorcube has been hosting shows for a few weeks now and are having a grand opening extraveganza over Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights this week. We'll be playing at some point during the festivities on Friday and we'd love to see you all there.

Shows, and the end of our grey exiled days

Oh friends, it has been too long. Remarkable how the time slips away when you're not paying attention...

Things have been buzz, buzz, buzzing around the ASD hive the last couple months as our very delayed second album "Waterfowl of Eastern Canada" draws ever closer to completion. A couple sweeteners, punch ins, and cellos and recording will be 100% finished. Mixing has already started and all of the songs are very close to being ready to send of for mastering. Huzzah!

In more immediate news, tonight our good friends Sleepy Seeds will be spreading their seed (or is it their sleep? I can never remember) in PDX. Check out all the details here

Well it has arrived my darlings...Boise's first annual Promenade Festival and holy hell is it ever gonna be a good one! The kickoff party is today at 3:30 in the Linen Building. Heya friends, how're y'all doin'? Good I hope. We're doing pretty good ourselves. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good. Ah-hem.

This a somewhat more formal post than you may be used to, so we'll try to make this as quick and painless as a declawed cheetah with gums where her teeth used to be.

The Very Most album release party has been moved from October 15th (see a couple posts below) to November 20th. It was intended to be at what is sure to be a glorious new all ages space by the name of Color Cube, unfortunately they are hitting some road bumps and will not be opening as soon as planned. However I am assured it is still on November 20th and we will still be there to deafen you.

We are returning to the Bouquet a week from yesterday (that would be Wednesday September 29th) to play with our good buddies Hillfolk Noir and new friends Kill County from Nebraska. We shall again be deafening you before these other fine bands hit the stage so bring your quaal...erm, ear plugs.

But wait, that's not all, if you call within the next ten minutes you will also get this salad spinner absolutely free! By which of course I mean Promenade is looking to be one DAMN awesome event. We will be playing Friday Oct 8th with Spondee, The Very Most, Le Fleur, La Knots, Yarn Owl, Tartufi and FROG EYES. Sexy.

Ok, so maybe it wasn't that quick or painless. More like being awake as they pull your wisdom teeth from your mouth and you know something is happening, but you don't know what in the good god is going on in there.

Cartilage and Sinew

The cold mornings are here. Sweater mornings. Good god I wish I had pajama pants mornings. Perhaps if I abstain from such things long enough my leg hair shall grow as mighty as the other beasts in my home and warmth will follow me everywhere. As if I needed another reason to hate summer.

Its under these conditions that I find myself listening to, wake the town and tell the people LOUD, music in hopes that the vibrations will heat the house. I seem to have the habit of mishearing lines in songs and then becoming so attached to the lines I thought were in them that I either refuse to learn the actual lyrics. Plus its SO much easier to sing only love now can change your name than old enough now to change your name. Recently, I had one of these moments with the line Carlitas and you, was the name of her act. Needless to say, that is not what I thought Danny boy was singing. Imagine the horror upon discovering that the line you had belted to no less than one dog and cat was WRONG. Oh, how the beasts with their fine manes of warm fur shall judge my shivering making up the words while the band sings something else lips. After some time of feeling right back in seventh grade I realized "no, fuck them and their judging ways! My line makes less sense but is at least 1.05 times more awesome!". It was clear then what must be done. The line is now ASD's and can be found in one of our new new songs that will hopefully be somewhat stage ready in a month or so.

Now...where the hell are my pants?! Its eff'n cold in this house!

As the weather begins to nice'n and the days begin to brighten, and as the lilacs begin to bloom and the bears crawl eagerly from hibernation, seeking out other like minded bears with whom they can instigate constructive horizontal business, we, your humble ASD troubadours, have decided to stay home this spring...SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO. Below we offer several reasons for you to get out yer house and join the frolicsome fray of flitting bees, dancing feet, and mating bears.

Just like your mother did when she caught you smearing the family cat with candle wax after you misunderstood something you read in that issue of Cosmo you found stuffed under your older brothers mattress. You remember the one, with the cover story titled 50 Ways to Sex Up Your Sexy Sex...And Keep Your Man. Moral of the story. It's never too early to teach your children that some words have multiple meanings, that Brazilians aren't necessarily just people from Brazil, and that...well, I'll leave that to you. Just know that we'll still love you.

We'll still love you even when your sun tan fades.

Can You Carry A Tune?

Greetings and Salutations.

Are you a person who can carry a tune? Even for a little bit? Without the aid of a bucket or electronic voice modulating device? If so, how would you like a shot at immortality, or at least very very modest to non-existent fame. We are a local Boise band currently in the process of recording an album. Our music falls generally into the broad indie rock catagory. Or perhaps chamber rock, (there is a clarinet after all). We are seeking an assortment of ladies and gentlemen interested in sharing their vocal talents in the form of some la la la's, perhaps a few hey hey hey's, and a variety of other backing accompanyment stylings. The idea is to form a women's chorus and a men's chorus to record parts to be distributed throughout the album. Unfortunately, as we are a local Boise band, we will not be able to pay you for these services. However, you will surely get a credit in the liner notes. It is our hope that the pure joy of lending your mighty lungs and vocal chords to a fun and interesting project will serve as payment enough. Of course, when the album inevitably begins selling well in Chad or Turkmenistan, and the heaps of strangely denominated money begin to pile up, we will certainly consider compensating our brave choirs with, at the very least, a tasty ice cream treat.

Now, the important information. There will be several sessions, most likely on weekends, when this recording will take place. The first session will be this Saturday, March 20th, at 2pm. If you have any interest in participating, please send us a brief email with your name and times when you might be available, as we will be scheduling other sessions to follow. We will respond as quickly as possible with the location and any other pertinent information.

How Many Billy Goats Can Dance Upon a Tortoise Shell?

Well, that's a question you'd all know the answer to if you were at Terrapin Station last night. Jonathan Warren and his Billy Goat accomplices took the shell by storm with the boot stompin'est taste of Appalachia seen this far north of the Mason-Dixon in many a long year. Our hats, had we been wearing any, would've been off. If you're free, they'll be playing on St. Patrick's Day at the Knitting Factory in Boise. A Seasonal Disguise (hey, that's us!) followed them on stage for a long set, and a load o' fun. We'd like to thank Terrapin for having us, and the Billy Goats for joining us. And especially, all the folks who turned out for the show on a Thursday night. Firstly, Saturday, April 3rd we'll be opening for The Cave Singers at the Neurolux. Here's how their recent album has been described on Amazon.

The second album from Seattle's CAVE SINGERS is a gorgeous, rich folky stew hitting musical touchstones from Led Zeppelin III (think Bron Yr Aur Stomp) to Iron and Wine, CCR, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, and Will Oldham. With a healthy dollop of the more mournful Stevie Nicks songs from Fleetwood Mac's mid-'70s period.

So really, how could you pass that up?

Secondly, we've been invited to play the annual Get Loud @ the Library! event on Tuesday, April 6th at 7:30pm. This event is free to the public, and will be taking place from 5pm-8pm at all four of the Boise Public Library! locations. Expect fun, games, music, and LOUD. We'll be playing in the auditorium of the Main Library, downtown.
(Full disclosure: two of our number are currently employed by the Boise Public Library!)

Now, time for some comics news. Perhaps you're aware that several of our members are fans of the 4 color funny books. If not, consider yourself advised. (We also like funny books with more than four colors). Well, it has recently come to our attention that Sweden is home to more than just icicles and Thor. Apparently there is also a rich and thriving culture located there, complete with musicians, writers, and artists. And even some writer/artists. And some of these writer/artists will soon be invading this very United States, by way of Marietta, Georgia based Top Shelf Productions, in a campaign that has garnered the (appropriate) moniker, The Swedish Invasion. Now, before you go out and try to squeeze into that 1950's bomb shelter in your backyard that was constructed at a time when the average American was considerably more...less, consider the following video missive from our would be invaders, and heed it's message.

PDX, gas leaks, strings and horny bits

I find that on long car rides with individuals of the same sex our collective IQ and social abilities devolve into something resembling in all ways a fart. And so it was in this state that I found myself in that fabled land of Portland Oregon at the start of last week. Ah and what a week it was.

Before I continue I would like to take this opportunity to publicly apologize to Nik Walton and his roommates for my shenanigans while crashing in their fine abode and thank them for the accommodations.

Upon arriving Nik and I set about scheduling recording times for our fine players of the stringy and horny bits for the upcoming ASD record (oh yes, we're working on a new record didn't you know? My, but you don't keep up on the news these days do you? ...oh wait...). We came prepared to work long and hard, everyday, whatever it takes! As it happened our lovely performers were only free a few hours on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Being the foolish young lads with little else to do we immediately went out and took in what was surely a positively tiny fraction of what Portland had to offer for the next four days. Highlights included long walk, good beer, better food, Powell's, Tender Loving Empire, Laughing Planet, wine, poutine, and a gas leak next door that forced us out of the house for a little longer than planned for fear of it exploding followed by little sleep and a recording mini-marathon.

A short plane ride and three day nap later, cradled in headphones listening to the fruits of our labors I have only this to say: holyshitradawesomesauce!

For those of you fortunate enough to be in Ireland this week, what a treat awaits. Our very good friends, The Very Most, will be performing two shows, for your very own ears. The first is tomorrow, 12/9/09 in Dundalk, Louth at The Spirit Store. The second is on 12/12/09 in Dublin at Whelan's Upstairs. If you happen to read this, and you happen to go to one of these inevitably fine shows, make sure to give TVM's bass player a pinch and a tickle, (or just a pat on the back), as he is A Seasonal Disguise's own fearless leader, Mr. Z. V. House, moonlighting far afield.

For those many of you who have surely thought, "Gee, I wonder, what's the most fantastic author's name Josh has ever run across in all his many years of working at the Library!"? Well, here's the answer. Radd Icenoggle, author of the fine guide to birds of the Northern Rockies, Birds in Place. I love his parents dearly.

Ask Not Toward Whom the Kudzu Creeps, It Creeps Toward Thee.

Oh, my long lost and best beloved, how I've missed you all. I trust you've been waiting with breath a-bait, for this, another installment of wonder.

First, a note of thanks, or more accurately, a warm and girthsome heap of thanks, to all of the folks who came out to the Spondee/The Very Most/A Seasonal Disguise/Last Regrets show Saturday in Pocatello. We had a blast rocking with you, and will absolutely be returning, hopefully sometime this spring.

Second, and this is where we get to the toothsome marrow of this post, last Friday ASD had the great honor of playing at the Finn Riggins/Le Fleur joint cd release party at VAC. And party it was! There were two stages, poster cutouts, beehives, theatrics, and fuzzy balls galore. There was a musical duel that ultimately culminated in a stabbing (of sorts). If you weren't there, my heart goes out to you and your family, and I would like to offer you an opportunity to assuage your shame, and repent your sin of omission.

Below, gentle hipsters, is a fantastic video, lovingly crafted by the remarkably talented Jason Sievers, for Finn Riggins "Wake (Keep this town Alive)". And herein lies your absolution. Upon watching this video no less than THRICE, and then successfully visiting both the Finn Riggins and Le Fleur websites posted below, you may consider yourself wholly straight with the scene and it's fickle, trucker hat sporting gods. Absolution of sins is just one of the myriad services that A Seasonal Disguise provides free of charge to it's fans and blog followers. And while we do not participate in or endorse the selling of indulgences, we do whole-heartedly recommend that you consider purchasing Finn Riggins and Le Fleur's new releases...as they are, in a word, AWESOME! So, here I am, writing this from the trunk of a Lincoln towncar. In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have stolen Inky Zeke's treasured Siamese, Teacup, sown on an extra head, and sold it to the circus freak show, but it was clearly begging for a life of adventure on the road, and who am I to deny a cat it's heart's desire. As so often happens when I find myself in this situation, bound hand and foot and supine in spilled transmission fluid in the trunk of some burly goon's boat of car, my mind wanders to Destroyer. More specifically, to the Destroyer covers album that we'll probably never have the opportunity to make. It makes me sad, even a bit weepy, thinking about all of those savory sibilant sounds seeping out the bearded mind of Bejar. Sounds so well formed, so perfect, well, they can induce a grown and trussed man to mist up a bit. (Of course, that could be the WD-40 I just accidentally spritzed in my eye).

But onward, to the point, people. And it's about Time. As in, time we don't got. As in, "hurry up please, it's time". As in, one partner in the cosmic fourth dimensional dance. You see, this very weekend, ASD will be going on a mini-TOOR!(sic) of the great Pacific Northwest. On Friday, Aug. 7th, we'll be playing a show with Planes Intersect at Mississippi Pizza in Portland, and on Saturday, Aug. 8th, we'll be playing a show with If Bears were Bees at Blue Moon in Seattle. But we're sad to announce that The Very Most will not be joining us, as previously planned, due to a family tragedy. Though we may be away, our thoughts will remain with them. And it makes me mindful of time, time we don't got, and how to use the time we do. And it's simple, and it's trite, but hold those that ya like, and goose those that ya don't, (even our enemies benefit from a little human contact).

And now I hear a key, turning in the lock. Perhaps Inky Zeke's found it in his voluminous heart to forgive me, or I'm about to get my cement shoe fitting. Either way, I don't regret a thing. That cat was pug-fucking-ugly anyway.

Once upon a time there was an 'Orrible Ogre who dragged behind him a nasty, knobby club. One day the 'Orrible Ogre was playing drums in a rock 'n' roll band and smashed up a nice, shiny splash cymbal with his mean old club. The cymbal flew clean off its stand--the wingnut went this way and the felt padding went that. God only knows what became of the washer and tubing!

Now, wherever the 'Orrible Ogre goes he shows his lumpy old bumpy smashed up splash cymbal and asks, "Hey man, you got a ball peen hammer?"

He introduced himself as Blake, so we'll call him Blake (Tyger, tyger, and all that). He had very kind words for us after the show last night. Here's wishing all the best for him--and I hope we can someday take him up on the offer of playing in Vancouver.

It was a great show all around. There was marching. You should have been there. (Sorry we couldn't get the bass drum strap-on together better, Julia. And Nick. And eveyone else in the band who had to wait for us. And the audience, who also had to wait).

And I apologize to Travis Ward & co. in Hillfolk Noir that I couldn't stay to hear them play. It's because I don't drive. You guys are fabulous and I'm only the poorer for not having heard you more often.

Greetings Friends.

It is long ere last I laid eyes on ye. You are all well, I trust, and comfortably dressed. Perhaps this missive finds you gently swaying in a hemp mesh hammock, sipping tonic water and making tentative advances toward that last mango slice precariously balanced on your fruit distended belly, the juice pooling in your navel a saccharine wading pool for tsetse flies. Don't let them bite you! And don't let that mango go to waste! Those little fuckers are expensive.

On an unrelated note: We would like to extend a warm thank you to everyone who was able to make it out to the show Sunday night. Without hesitation I can say that we appreciate each and every one of you. And thank you for being willing to enthusiastically bang on plastic tubes and drums. Also, a hearty thank you to Sleepy Seeds, for their fine guitarmanship. And to Jeff Hanson, for stopping in Boise, (or Garden City, as it were), to share his observations and music. Jeff, may your future road be Nickleback and high-five free.

Sadly, our tour horse, Monday Bloody Monday, threw a shoe over the weekend, and the farrier may be unable to repair it in time for our early June trip through Oregon and Washington. And rather than ride rough shod over those two states, like the intemperate and obdurate horde we usually are, we thought it best to indefinitely postpone our grand adventure. Alas, there may also have been other, more mundane, issues that wrenched our plans awry. If anything changes in this regard, we will let you, our adoring and strangely quiet public, know.

Lastly, keep your optical nerves honed and focused here, on this very blog, for one day in the distant future, this could potentially be the home of the next web sensation, a Google for the poor and semi-literate, a Chucky Cheese for the lactose intolerant, a manual butter churn for the henpeck housewife, a veritable boon for those who aspire to little, and achieve less, brought to you by the good people at Locke & Otis Productions. Of what wonder do I speak? What marvel of human ingenuity? Why, of Wombat Justice, of course. As one astute and sensitive reviewer put it, "What the fuck is Wombat Justice? It looks like someone spilled ink all over the damn place. Is this supposed to be funny? What the hell is wrong with you people?" That's right, you heard it here first, folks.

A Mathematical Disguise

As promised by sir Josh deca-Hertz, ASD is posting its first physics/math rant/challenge to you all in the web-o-sphere. So sharpen those pencils, light your stogies, and pet your fish in preparation 'cause here we go!

For the first posting in this series we are going to go ahead and dive right in to some heady yet interesting terrain; the principle of gauge invariance. Our current understanding of the way the universe is put together is based on an idea known as the gauge principle. Put simply, the way the universe behaves should not depend on the way we look at it. A basic version of this principle has been known for some time in the form of space-time invariance. By space-time invariance we mean to say that the laws of physics should not change simply by moving around in space or time: if you are listening to your local rockin' band playing live and then decide to move to a different location in the room or perhaps wait for the inevitable mind-bending refrain one minute later, the way the sound waves propogate (for example) should not correspondingly change. You might be hearing different frequencies due to the acoustics in the room or in that the refrain has a different set of chord progressions, but the fundamental physics behind the sound waves does not change. This may seem obvious, but the best ideas in science are those obvious ideas that have profound consequences. In our example, as a consequence of the physics not changing in time we can actually prove the law of conservation of energy. That's right, this simple idea is the origin of the world's energy crisis... talk about profound.

Space-time invariance has been well known since Galileo (and likely significantly earlier), but another kind of symmetry has popped up more recently which is gauge invariance. To understand this we must review some quantum field theory (it's okay, just keep petting your fish) which says that all kinds of matter can be described by a field that exists everywhere in space, and the properties of that field will dictate how different kinds of matter will interact with each other. This idea is itself nothing new. Photons (the particles that make up light) are described by electromagnetic fields for example, which has been known for over a century. But, our new theory predicts that everything; electrons, protons, neutrinos, etc. have an associated field and that oscillations of that field produce the particles in question. Pretty neat, eh?

Let us focus on electrons, those damn things that shock you when moonwalking too much on your grandma's shag carpet. The field associated with electrons is known as a Dirac field. Now, it turns out that if we take a Dirac field and multiply it by a complex number, the physical quantities that we can measure from the field do not change. Therefore we also expect that the equations that dictate the behavior of the Dirac field should also not change. This process of multiplying a Dirac field by a complex number is known as a guage transformation, and the expectation that the behavior of the field should remain unchanged is known as gauge invariance (or the gauge principle). Now here is the punchline: it turns out that as a by-product of imposing the gauge invariance restriction on the equation that dictates the behavior of the field (known as the Lagrangian), we have to by hand put terms into this equation, and those terms predict the interaction between electrons and photons! Yes indeed. Before we had to just assume that an electron and a photon interacted in a particular way (our cell phones work, so we're pretty sure they interact), but now we actually have a physical principle that predicts this interaction. This theory is known as quantum electro-dynamics, or QED. One can take this principle furthur to tie together QED with other particles, leading in the end to a unified view of the universe that connects together all the known forces... except for gravity, but that's a different story.

So, here is the challenge: the Lagrangian which describes the Dirac field is given by

Here the psi symbol is the Dirac field (which is a column vector), the gamma symbol is a constant matrix, and m is the mass of the electron. The bar over the psi refers to the vector that has been transposed, complex-conjugated, and multiplied by another constant matrix, and the derivative (the delta symbol) is with respect to position. If we make the transformation on our Dirac field

where theta is a general function of position x, then we will also transform the Lagrangian into a new function, and this new function had better have the same form as the old one. Show that by taking the derivative of the Dirac field transformation we get two terms: one that is proportional to the derivative of the field, and another that is proportional to the field itself.

This second term is what must be cancelled in the Lagrangian equation, thus leading to the inclusion by hand of a cancelling term which coincidentally predicts electromagnetic interaction. Holy cow!

Terrifying Tidbits of Torch-Fired Terra Cotta

Several things of note:

1. Last Sunday, A Seasonal Disguise had the great pleasure of playing a show with Clem Snide, Heligoats, and Sleepy Seeds. For those of you unaware of these fine bands, get thee out of thy nunnery and down to your local record store. Or find them on the internet. Thanks to those brave folks who tempted the wrath of the Easter bunny and came out for the show. And especial thanks to Clem Snide and Heligoats for stopping in Boise on what would have been their day off.

2. ASD is soon going to be gearing up to shoot our first music video, (queue gasps of awe). You know music videos, right? Those things with light, and motion, and sound, that you never see on MTV anymore. You know MTV, right? The alleged purveyor of music and youth culture which will “rot on the windmills of eternity”.
Here’s what information I can give you now, dear readers. The video will be for the song, “Won’t You Hibernate With Me?”. It will involve bears. Also, tentative love. And sweat. And we may be calling upon you, our loyal readership, to assist us in this endeavor, so keep your eyes tuned to this channel.

3. Lastly, our comrade in musical arms, Sup, keyboardist extraordinaire and distinguished Special Lecturer in Physics at a local institution of higher learnin, will be posting a question mathematical, to this very blog. The first person who sends the correct answer to the aforementioned question will be rewarded with something ASD related. Perhaps a shirt, cd, or other item of shwag. Ideally this will become a regular contest of cunning, so tell all of your friends who enjoy the occasional equation to keep their pencils sharp.

Stop Frenching That Porcupine! : A non-standard and wildly inaccurate portrait of A Seasonal Disguise

With a sound ranging from acoustic folk, to outright mind melting rock, A Seasonal Disguise has something for all comers. Having emerged successfully from the warm, nurturing abattoir of the Boise, Idaho music scene, and having finally conquered their collective addiction to Flintstones chewable vitamins, the members of ASD are prepared to bring sweet, sweet accordion and glockenspiel to your doorstep. Few other bands can boast such an extensive knowledge of popular 80's cartoons, theoretical physics, and Joycean intertextuality, while still assiduously avoiding any kind of popular or critical acclaim. Juxtaposing a real and burning desire for violent world conquest, with a predilection for petting kittens and frolicking in dandelion fuzz, ASD hopes to show that it is possible to achieve your dreams, so long as they are mundane and require little effort.

Roaming the wild Idaho steppes like the great musical nomads of days past, Genghis Khan, Rumi, Tolstoy, Prince, ASD leaves no stone unturned in their search for nourishing grubs and succulent camas roots. This strict dietary regimen is primarily responsible for the bands outsized mental prowess and significantly reduced visual acuity. One would be wise to approach the group cautiously, as their poor eyesight makes them easily confused and prone to attack, often hugging a victim until they no longer believe in love or the standard procreative processes. Witnesses have variously described this behavior as “charming”, “unsettling”, and “a complete derangement of the normal Western socio-political paradigm”. While sometimes dangerous as a group, when approached individually, band members are docile and nearly defenseless. Their unfocused eyes rarely leave their shoes. Be gentle with them when they are in this vulnerable state, as any sudden movement will trigger the flight response, thus spoiling any chance of a meaningful conversation about the finer points of molting in Etruscan humming birds.

ASD's FBI file reveals that several members are full fledged acolytes in the Cult of Destroyer, Bejar Be Praised, and this has led some to erroneously compare the band to a shorn and repentant wombat. Though their metaphors are obscure, and skeptics abound, the real joy of this group is not found in their penchant for separating muons from their attendant bremsstrahlung radiation, or in their quaint and futile attempts to speak English, but in their music. Audiophiles, and even some humans, have suggested that listening to the smooth, curvaceous, occasionally atonal, songs of A Seasonal Disguise pleasantly invokes the feeling of a rowdy and illicit shag with a coked out steel worker in a truck stop restroom, while Krishna, in all his azure glory, hovers above, gently plucking a zither and belting out Burt Bacharach standards. Other, less verbose observers sum it up thusly, “Fucking Awesome!”. So, by all means, go, listen, give them your money, and your phone number, or just say hello. But watch out for the claws!

Two or three recording sessions working on the new album, postering for a show on Easter Sunday...a show on Easter Sunday...that's a lot of work for a band with a collective total of 7 tax reportable jobs (two of which are held by a full time university student to boot) and active, totally rock 'n roll lifestyles. Totes.

All ridiculousness aside, we have a show this Sunday! Easter Sunday! April 12! We are playing some fine fine bands like: Clem Snide, Heligoats, and Sleepy Seeds. Huzzah I says. Huzzah!

I was born an April fool

"I was born an April fool" is something Mr. Otis from the low frequency sect of our fine band said this morning. Well as Mr. Krug has said - can I use that it in a song?

Big couple of weeks coming up in ASD land (we should totally start an amusement park called that). On Friday and Saturday we will descend upon the recording studio yet again to work on drums for a couple of songs. Sunday April 12th we will play what is sure to be a fabulous show at VAC with Clem Snide, Heligoats, and Sleepy Seeds. Ok - so that doesn't sound like a lot but it's big for us.

Before I get to the point I would like to express my deep regret that my play on words in the title of my previous post was mistaken as a typo by one of my fellow band mates. Perhaps it was not playful enough? Or maybe it was plenty playful but was so far from clever that it failed before I typed it? Regardless, look for it as a future A.S.D. lyric.

Anyway, now is the time we begin our courting of you to our record release party! Today we have the first in a series of, for lack of a better word, tidbits about the awesome of our upcoming show. And so without further ado...

Seems I'm a rather lazy blogger. Well bollocks to that! No more! Especially given that there is a lot going on in the A.S.D. universe! Some of it isn't that exciting though. So here's what we've got.

We're now on Twitter (yes let that sink in - it hurt me too but it seems to be a good move). So if you tweet or whatever it is exactly that people do on twitter you can find us at http://twitter.com/A_S_D.

We have a new song with a fucking field drum in it. That's right. Now it just needs a title.... I also realized a few days that there is no guitar on that song at all. What the hell kind of rock band are we?

We're having a CD release party! The poster for it is up there at the top of the page. We will be gradually releasing more details about this over the next few weeks. In the mean time, please spread the word! We hope to see all of you there!

So with the holidays upon us and your days blending ever more into a streaming flash video of relatives, consumerism, and self medication we have the following important items of note. Important if you are a fan of this band that is, and I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume you at least kind of are since you're reading this blog (if you've simply lost your cyber-way just go back to the entry portal).

First off, A Seasonal Disguise's full length debut is in hiding and we are preparing a CD release party in February. Stay tuned for details.

Second, we have a show! We are playing the second slot on the second day of the Bah Humbug! festival. This means we will be playing at around 7:30 on December 20th but that you should all come out and rock with us. The festival is a fund raiser for the Visual Arts Collective (which is coincidentally where it's being held at 3638 Osage Street, Garden City, Idaho). Come on down it's $5 a day and the VAC could really use your support and we would love to rock you in the process.

Look for a surprise in the coming weeks. Until then...

So it goes - A tale of a whirlwind weekend tour

The latest tour has died. But do not mourn oh faithful readers! It had a good life and was quite ready to move on at its time of passing.

On the first day (Friday, Nov 21 2008) we found ourselves in Kennewick, WA. The tri-cities (of which Kennewick is one) area is a rather interesting place to start a tour based of Boise given that when you arrive it seems rather as if you haven't really gone anywhere. The scenery is very similar, the town has a similar feel - hell, they even have a Locust Grove road. But then you get to the show, and there's a venue with a marquee. And then people start to show up. And they're all excited some of them even dance. And the sound is amazing. And people buy merch...lots of merch. At some point along this laundry list you suddenly realize you're not in Kansas...er...Boise anymore. Oh lord, don't let me be misunderstood - Boise is great, we just need to have a long hard talk with ourselves about making it out to shows. But this is entirely beside the point - and that's assuming there is one. We rocked it super fucking hard.

Day two found us in Bellingham playing a house with a large velvet (felt?) vagina on the wall. We were tired but still rocked a fair to middling amount. We were also treated to complete face melting girl punk by The Connecticut Four (I will say that the rock on their myspace is only a fraction of the awesome they injected into my ears) kudos to them. We're starting a band just to open for them in Boise. Later on in the day we made it down to Seattle where we played another awesome house show. Real Live Tigers continues to delight me no small amount - and Weebelos I loved your set and your EP - and I've forgotten the name of the folks who played first but you two fellows were badass - you've made me want a saw solo in every song...ever.

Day three we returned to Boise. At this point driving and rocking and navigating had put us in sleepy and pissy moods. Luckily we didn't kill each other and we didn't wreck. Saw LAKE and Desolation Wilderness at the VAC and The Very Most ended the night.

And we are THAT excited. After months of being reclusive little bastards A.S.D. will be breaking out of our shell! This Friday Oct 17 at The Leaf and Bean Coffee and Tea House

This will likely be one of our last "acoustic" shows in the Boise-Nampa-etc. area for awhile AND we will be showing off a few new songs that are coming together with the full band. The night is free and we're playing with one of our favorite friends and label mates: The Very Most.

Good news in the world of A.S.D! Tomorrow we have our first practice as a three piece band! Julia will join us on vocals as soon as it's more together and we will hopefully start playing/recording before the end of the year. Hoorah!

The full band set will consist of primarily if not exclusively new songs - as I have probably mentioned before. After much stagnation there were some breakthroughs today. Three sets of lyrics were completed minus mild editing. One of which became part of a set of music that was already about.

The world of A.S.D. has been a little hectic the past two weeks. K has arrived back in town. That is all I feel I must say about the situation.

In other news. Demoing has commenced on the three new songs. They are sounding relatively glorious. Particularly Golden Butterfly. Purple Palindromes In The Office Of The General has just been started but is coming along nicely. And Cloudy In____ is well on its way to some sort of glory.

Purple Palindromes?

I'm late again. Damn. It would seem that I am beginning to have a problem with this. Lets make a pact. If I don't update this coming Friday - one of you faithful readers should smack me. Deal? Sounds fair to me....

Anyway. Played with The Very Most on Friday at the Flying M Coffee Garage. Fantastic set, first full band show in awhile and it all felt very good. I ended up doing an impromptu three song set in between bands...and...that was a good time. Played with a fantastic band from back east called Great White______ -unfortunately I can't remember the rest of their name and I feel bad for this, but I'm not usually one to look things like this up and as such will wait to be corrected. Kudos to them for rocking so thoroughly.

Still a rather slow time in A.S.D. land. Ms. Julia Green and I are working on the artwork/design for our first release. This is taking longer and I am dragging my feet more than expected. I need to promptly snap out of this so Coming In Second can release another damn record and I can finally put something I've created to bed. New songs are slowly trickling out, and a more complete line up may well be in our 3-6 month future (yay for not playing every instrument on the recording!!!).

Coming next week, lyrics and possibly a link to a demo (if I make one) of a new song called "Purple Palindromes In The Office Of The General"

Welcome Back.

Apologies for the lack of update last week. I was well on my way to THE GORGE in Washington before I remembered "SHIT! I forgot to post!". Oh well I s'pose. Following on from that, Sasquatch 2008 was AMAZING. Many fantastic bands, many fantastic experiences, much missing.

In A.S.D. news - we played a show with Mr. Drew Danburry and The Very Most earlier this week. It was rather lovely. Small turnout, but a very special intimate night. Highlights include - War on War cover by The Very Most - Drew's car key breaking completely in half in his pocket - watching Meeting People Is Easy while falling asleep back home. The next morning I drove Drew and Co. to a locksmith said farewell and went to work. A very good night, hope to play with Danburry again!

At the moment we're not playing again until June - so hopefully that means we can get Album-vember out by then.

Late again - but with good reason!

Last night we played at the Flying M Coffee Garage in Nampa, ID with the mighty Finn Riggins
and ending up chatting with our Finny, Rigginsy friends until rather late. One of the best times we've had out at the garage. A very good and large crowd, good set in spite of my illness. Thank you so much to everyone who made it out!

In other news. Jeremy and I mastered "albumvember" on Wednesday. Now all that's left to finish is the artwork. Look for our first physical release early this summer on Coming In Second! WOO!

I had my wisdom teeth removed yesterday. I still have them in a little bag though, so watch out I've still got my wisdom to take you out with.

Thanks to everybody who came out to see us play at The Market in Nampa last Saturday. It was a good time and I imagine it will only get better once people realize that there's music going on there. We hope to play there with some regularity in the coming year.

Jeremy J. and I will work on mastering " " aka "Albumvember" aka "Goat Boat" etc. this coming Wednesday night. We hope to have artwork and everything done by mid June to early July. Look for it's release on Coming In Second later this year.

Once the mastering is complete I intend to get started working on new A.S.D. recordings. I again started this project thinking I was going to make a ridiculous complex concept album. As per usual, this has fallen through. Not exactly sure what to expect from it at this point - but I suspect it will include new, previously recorded, and forgotten older songs drug out of the closet and forced into the light. Recording will hopefully start by June and we hope to be done by the following spring/early summer. Mind you, this is me talking and I have a tendency to completely ignore my own deadlines more often than not.

Square Dance Attack!

So tonight is the night (also, I can't seem to update this thing on time). The Very Most's cd release party!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOO! You should all come, it will be fun! This five band extravaganza will be held at the Idaho Outdoor Association hall (formerly hunters and stuff, until they was a hostile takeover by square dancers). The address is 3401 Brazil St which is near I-84 off of Vista in Boise, ID. A.S.D. will be rocking a new line up for this show. Probably the closest thing to a rock band this group has ever been. We start at 6:30 and would LOVE to see you there! The best band always plays first right? RIGHT?

Winter, in no uncertain terms is a most vile bitch. In 3 months you can smack my ass for complaining about the "unreasonable hell that is summer". But for now as far as I'm concerned winter can suck it. Back in November I was still very much in love with Winter which I am currently convinced had something to do with how well the "album-vember" project went.

So, winter, if you can hear me. Fuck off. Die. Go away for a few months, and I promise you will be welcomed back with wide inviting sunburnt arms. Please? I need fresh blood. I need the lovely sun. I need to get out of town. I need something new to write about! You have inspired ONE new song since November. ONE. In almost 6 months now.

So, sorry about the lateness....had to work all day yesterday and my evening was all full up. Full of dal and lovelyness. Speaking of which, any of you interested in joining the "Indian food for thanksgiving" movement - drop me a line. Mmmm, dal.

Today is a day of practices - off to Jeremy's to get The Very Most ready for the Big Easy show. This will be followed by the first FULL band practice for A.S.D. in quite a damn long while. At present we are playing as a three piece. Geoff on Bass/Keys, Julia on Vocals/Percussion, and me on Guitars/Keys/Vocals. So far I think this is the tightest line up this band has had....hopefully this trend will continue.

So, tonight I took a step towards the back of the stage for my other role as bass player in The Very Most. We played at one of Boise's new branch libraries. The show was pretty good if a bit sloppy at times. Quote of the night "My daughters one helluva dancer....maybe I shouldn't have said that at the library".

A.S.D. is preparing for our set at the Very Most's cd release party (April 26th WOO!). Tomorrow Geoff and I will be getting together to nail down the bass and keys. Should be good...then just one more practice before RAWK.

Hoorah. There is little more going on at the moment....listening to some delightful Eels b-sides and thinking about sleeping (hence the lateness of this post. YAR!). It's Cloudy In Boise Idaho...Pt. 1

So the sticker thing is going about how I expected. Lots of ideas from close friends of the band and a couple rogue submissions. On the other hand, they're all pretty great. Which of course means lots of narrowing down...uff.

In other news it sounds like the "Album-Vember" project (presently titled " ") will in fact see release on Coming In Second later this summer. All that's required is a home mastering job and getting the cd's actually printed. Hooray!

New songs are starting to flow again....sort of. Finally firming up some basic music ideas that have been floating around for awhile, and one brand new song that will make its debut at The Very Most cd release party on April 26th. It's called "Cloudy In____" or something like that. Written on a whim after a day of being less than amused that it had snowed - in April. Seriously winter, piss off. Look for them here in the next week or so...

Debut...and stickers!

So, about time A Seasonal Disguise had a blog don't you think? Well...maybe not. But, it was 12:30am and being that I'm an old man inside it seemed very late and this a good idea.

For those of you who don't know A Seasonal Disguise (A.S.D.)is a little band from Boise, Id. We have a liquid line-up and are friends with lots of other little bands from Boise. Like who? Oh you know, the usual: The Very Most, Central City Music Company, Bonefish Sam and His Orchestra, Pajama Party In A Haunted Hive/Unicorn Feather/With Child, Torrid Sage, Uncle Bud and various others similar and painfully different from us. I am the dictator of A.S.D. The primary songwriter and energy source for the project. At present I reveal myself to the public as Z.V. House. We'll leave the name business at that for now.

This blog will be updated on a M-W-F schedule for now, with occasional random posts and the possibility of increased post frequency if there are lots of interesting things to say. Expect this to be your first source for news, my rantings, new random lyrics, and the like. No doubt it will drift down to the myspace, facebook, and other sundry sites we maintain, but dag nabbit, it's time we set up a central place for me to rant!

And so we come to the first order of business! Here's the news. We want to make a series of stickers to give to you our adoring public (all....8-12 of you). BUT, we need your help! We want your brilliant/funny/horrible/random/beautiful phrases. You know the ones. Those gems that spill out of your mouth after one too many beers. The things you say to co-workers in hopes of getting them to NOT talk to you. The cute inside jokes of you and your sweetheart. Printed for the world to see on official A Seasonal Disguise stickers!
